Habiba

Habiba Mahmoud is a girl who lives on the island of Lamu, off the coast of Kenya.
A former Children of Fire volunteer Simon Pike visited the island as a tourist and noticed the girl's burn injuries. He asked if we could help.
We duly liaised with Habiba's father's employer Carol Korschen and also with American surgeon Dr Louis Carter.
We arranged for Habiba to travel inland to Nakuru in Kenya on a 13 hour bus journey. She went twice....
She then had successful surgery and returned to the island, her life much improved.
While Children of Fire's policy is to amputate nothing unless there is a pressing need to do so, managing surgery long-distance is hard to do. The little toe on her injured foot was amputated.
But more significantly, Habiba's big toe was realigned into its natural position so that she can wear normal shoes again.
Thanks to Simon for noticing, Carol for facilitating and to Dr Carter and his colleagues for the surgery.

I really did not get a chance to evaluate the girl other than medical exam as it was the very last few days of my 11 week stay in Kenya. She will be followed up at the CURE Mombasa clinic—held once a month.
